El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico: The University of Salsa
Founded in 1962 by Don Rafael Ithier, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico has solidified itself as one of the most emblematic groups in salsa music. Don Rafael, who recently celebrated his 98th
birthday, continues to lead the group with the same passion and energy that have defined him for decades.
With over 60 years of musical excellence, El Gran Combo has left an indelible mark on Latin music. The group has released more than 90 albums and remains a staple in the industry thanks
to its unmistakable sound. In recent years, under the Rimas Entertainment label, they released their two latest productions: En Cuarentena (2021) and De Trulla con El Gran Combo (2021),
both of which were met with critical and commercial success.
Today, El Gran Combo continues to share its music worldwide, captivating audiences across generations. The current lineup features Jerry Rivas, Joselito Hernández, and Anthony García as vocalists. The brass section includes Wilfredo Miranda, Josué Urbina, Moisés Nogueras, Julio Alvarado, and Carlos Vargas. On percussion, Richie Bastar, José Miguel Torres, and Domingo Santos bring the rhythms to life, while Leni Prieto handles the piano and Wilfredo Rivera plays bass.
Despite the natural changes in its lineup over the years, El Gran Combo remains an unstoppable salsa powerhouse, performing worldwide and bringing their music to nearly every corner of the planet. Don Rafael Ithier often jokes, “The only place left for us to perform is the moon.” Their music has been a cultural bridge, connecting generations of fans and winning hearts across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
Among their most iconic hits are “Un Verano en Nueva York,” “Brujería,” “Azuquita pa’l café,” and “Y No Hago Más Ná.” These songs have not only been the soundtrack to countless celebrations but have also defined the sound of salsa on a global scale. With over 2 million followers on social media, El Gran Combo remains a giant in tropical music, proving that salsa has no age and that their legacy will endure for many more decades. And as history has shown, there are still no signs of them slowing down.
